i recently came into some money ($200) so i figure i can afford to buy a dvd burner if i add some more cash to that $200.

what do you guys think is the better format to go with. dvd+rw seems to be faster but i am now seeing lots of dvd-rw drives come out. i'm thinking of using it for mostly backing up data, and burning movies from my dv cam onto. i am leaning towards the toshiba dvd-rw drive, instead of a pioneer a04, because the toshiba can also burn normal cd's at 16x.

but 2.4x dvd+rw drives also seem good and most of those burn cdrs at 12x which is also good enough. mainly i'm wondering which standard is looking like its going to win out if anyone has an idea or done lots of research on this already.

I just got the Sony DRU500A. I have burned CDs fine and +RW fine. I cannot get a data disc burned on Memorex -RW. However I have made home movies on +RW and -RW. For some reason the +RW is better looking and the -RW has problems in my home Sony DVD player (player just freaks out and gets lost). I am still playing with this thing...

look up to eug's sig.. he has a dvd recordable faq.

btw, $160 for me was after tax and PM w/ staples.. and no rebates because they screwed up my order.. all i'm waiting for is a check from them which they put in when I ordered :) But i STILL haven't used it... waiting for the nforce2.. grr...

don't get -r -rw, a lot of dvd players won't read that format if i'm not wrong. I think +r/+rw is the way to go

-r/-rw is similar to +r/+rw in compatibility. +r/+rw has a better public relations department though. ;)

now i'm actually thinking of waiting till this whole standards war clears. i dont relaly wanna sink $200 into something i wont use that much and wont last that long. i am trying the pioneer out and its dvd read and cdr write are just horrible.

The Pioneer A05 is faster for CD writes. For DVD reads, it's not very fast either I believe.

As for standards, regardless if you burn a +R disc or a DVD-R disc, both will still work in most machines. It's NOT like VHS vs beta.

being impulsive i ended up buying the toshiba dvd-rw and ebaying my pioneer.

the toshiba is much more acceptable, 12x dvd read, and 16x cd-r burn. i do burn a decent amount of cds and well 8x just i couldnt live with. cost more money, but well its probably worth it in the long run.

Omg That forum almost stopped me from pulling my hair out....still goin crazy over this whole dvd thing....heh guess I better start paying better attention on when reviews were posted. But Im still un-clear about which one to get, I just wanna be able to copy my existing movies and put originals up. To many guests, friends, and family members miss-handle them.

Digitalfocker - dvd+r/rw or dvd-r/rw is not the main issue when wanting to copy dvd movies. Current movies are too large to do direct dvd copies, so you will have to strip/re-encode the movie to make it fit - and that is the biggest issue. From what I've read, +r and -r are similiar in compatibility. I've used -r and they have worked in at least 5 dvd players. I prefer -r because of the cost (hardware and media).
