DVD+RW Install - running out of IDE Slots

Trying to install a Verbatim DVD+RW burner I bought recently, but I cannot get my PC to recognize that it's installed. I have IDE 1 with my Maxtor 40GB HDD as a master and nothing else on it. IDE 2 has my Lite-On DVD-ROM as master and Lite-On 32x12x40 CDRW as slave.

The mother board is an ABIT IT7 with RAID and the user's manual say that I can use IDE 3 to IDE 6 to allow me to have eight more IDE devices conected because of this feature. Well, I have the DVD burner connected to the IDE 3 but cannot get it to work. Any suggestions???

I wouldn't mind connecting the DVD burner as a slave on the same IDE as my HDD, but I read that one should not do that as it may slow the HDD down.

Most raid controllers dont work with optical drives, try putting your burner on the onboard ide connectors.

Exactly, put the hard disk on the RAID controller and the optical drives on IDE1 and IDE2.
