DVD-RW drive won't open fully!

My uncle's emachine XP-SP2, installed a DVD drive (an LG Super Multi) a few months ago.

It worked fine, one day it just stopped opening. By that I mean, when you press the eject button, it slows down as if to eject, the drawer gives it a go but closes again as soon as it starts to open.Sometimes it makes it like an inch open then closes again.

The only way I've managed to get it open is either in safe mode, or using the inject media wizard to sort of grab it's attention.

My view is that something is requesting the dvd media often enough to never let the drive open, that's why I said using the inject wizard grabs it's attention.

Any ideas, I'm going out for a bit so just post all your ideas and I'll get back to them in a few hours.

Thanks!

btw, I have tried right-click ejecting and using the mechanically forced eject pinhole thingy. Obviously the mech way works but is in no way an acceptable solution.

soudns mechanical... once the tray gets some resistance it will close automatically.... see if you can open it manually and clean it or GENTLY lubricate the mechanism. new 16X DVD-RW drives are only $38 shipped

Sounds like a program (or windows) is constantly accessing the drive, causing it to slose before it can fully open. Check whatever is running in the background for disk utilities or media programs.

Ok, not sure what the problem is yet, but when i pressed eject a few minutes ago, it made a loud crunching sound and THEN did the not opening trick. It should never make any noise like this, shall I just RMA it?

As you say Deathwalker, but if the fella asks a q, and if the fella wants to know the answer, then tshoot it must be.
But, practically, you are right.

I'd just bring up the task manager and end all processess that you don't need (just be sure to leave explorer, isass, services, smss, svchost, system, taskmg, and winlogon since these are all XP processes). Then try to eject. Might as well try disabling autorun also, as it tends to get 'broken' in XP.
