DVD/RW drive disappears from 'My Computer'

I have a problem that's been going on with all my CD/DVD ROM drives. It'll show up in the boot sequence but not in WinXP. I can temporalily resolve the problem by turning off the the computer, unplugging the IDE cables, and then replugging them. It'll show up in Windows but after the computer shuts off, it will not show up in the next startup. The drive has power and I've tried new cables. What could be the problem?

How many drives is it happening to? Are they all on the same cable? If you only have one at a time plugged in, does it still happen?

The DVD drive is the only drive on the cable and is set to "master".

If you have a Nvidia chipset, uninstall the IDE driver than came with their driver pack
