Hi,
Over the weekend I assembled a new computer based using the following components:
Motherboard: ECS P4M800PRO-M (1.0A), micro ATX
CPU: Intel Celeron 3.0
Video: Nvidia Geforce (I'm not sure which model)
Memory: 2x1GB Ultra 400 DDR
Hard Drives: Seagate 200GB
DVD: I/O Magic DVD-RW 1008 (8x)
OS: WIndows XP Prof
Will reinstalling the VIA 4-in-1 driver rectify the problem?
Am I missing something here?
Can anybody offer suggestions here?
Background
I installed Windows XP Pro using the above components. However, after installing Windows XP device manager reported that the DVD drive was not working as well as several other components for which I needed to enter drivers for. I entered VIA 4-in-1 drivers, Windows SP2, and the other drivers (in this order) from the internet, and all devices were listed as working in device manager. When I attempted to load software from CDs, the computer would not work with the above DVD drive. I receive an i/o error and explorer would not open any file on a CD. I used an older optical drive, Memorex DVD, to install additional software, it worked flawlessly.
I have 2 I/O Magic DVD-RW 1008 drives and neither will work with this setup. The initial installation of the OS was done with a brand new I/O Magic DVD-RW. This drive does work as the OS was installed from it, and the drive works with the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD). I have a second identical I/O Magic drive, which is working fine, in a working PC, I connected this drive and achieved the same result. Windows Explorer slows to a crawl trying to access a CD and finally gives an i/o error.
This motherboard uses VIA chipsets: North Bridge P4M800Pro & South Bridge VT8237R Plus. Device manager reports that the DVD drive is working properly and is utilizing the MS driver (not the VIA IDE drivers). I have upgraded the firmware onboard the the DVD drive and the motherboard bios, but these upgrades did not help.
