DVD-ROMs.... what's a decent speed?

I'm looking to buy one.... anyone use one on their computer want to contribute to helping me out? What speed is a decent X speed? What are the differences ...do you notice? Does it matter?

I think the standard these days is 16x, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd buy one from Dell Software & Peripherals or NewEgg.com

You only need the slowest (1X) to play DVDs. Faster speeds means faster surfing through menus and ripping if you're going to do that. A DVD drive has a speed for reading DVDs and another for reading CDs.

I have a 5X DVD/32X CD and I have no problems.

Yeah, 16x is more then enough.


Toshiba and Panasonic make great ones.

16x might not seem like much speed compared to the 48x cdrom drives of today but keep in mind that a 16x DVD drive is about equal to twice that on a cdrom or so.

I agree, it's a great drive.
i wouldn't recommend it if you want to do digital audio extraction though. Don't get me wrong, it will do it great, but the read offset is kinda large, and it cant read into leadin/leadout.
If you didn't understand what that means, then it'll do everything FINE for you, including DAE. It's definetly a great drive for less than 40 bucks :)
