Hi, The SEARCH feature works well here.

Pioneer or Toshiba make excellent drives.

Pioneer is good. They make some good drives and the 16 is pretty good.

John- This isn't any flame or anything, but every time I see you post it has a first comment about telling people to search through the forums. Not to say that isn't a good thing, if people used the search to answer all their questions the forums would have a lot less posts. This is what is keeping the forums popular with plenty of new posts. Also, each person is in their own situation with a system that may confilct with a part that was recommended to a person without the part. I know I have posted a few times with more specific questions than the ones I have found by searching, so I just posted because I felt my questions would be better answered and possibly with a different one. When I posted that, sure enough you were there telling me to use the search. No offense, but seeing you posting that all over the forums is very annoying!

Edit: Oh yea, I forgot to mention no matter how appealing the deal is or anything, don't buy I/O Magic drives. They have horrible performance and my 8x dvd-rom drive has the most horrid time with burned cds and it freezes my computer for a whole minute while trying to read any cd!

I have the toshiba 16x dvd. Real nice and quiet, way better than my creative 52x cd-rom. I also have tried the pioneer 12x slot loading dvd, which is nice too and quiet.

Syborg1211, I appreciate your comments, but you are a little out of line. I seldom ask people to use the SEARCH feature. I think this makes the 4th time in a span of 2months....possibly longer.

I posted "use the search feature" in a total of two threads today. Each week someone asks "what is the best DVDROM" and "what is the best xx monitor". In fact last week you asked about DVDROM recommendations, and YES I asked you to use the search. However just like everyone else, I also left an answer to the initial question. If we can promote the use of the SEARCH feature to the new people, then forum clutter will be reduced.

* on a lighter note, the Pioneer has excellent DAE but is a little loud. However if you have a lot of fans in your case, the sound issue is moot.

I had a Pioneer 10x DVD ROM...worked very well but it was very loud when reading CDs...I'd try a Toshiba they are suppose to be much quiter when reading CDs.

If your CPU is 400Mhz+ the only reason you'd need a Decoder card is for TV-out. I've never tried a G450 in that regard, but the H+ has much nicer TV-out quality that the video cards I have tried.

(H+ = Hollywood Plus, which is the Sigma Designs self branded Decoder card, the Dxr3 is just a rebagded H+ with different drivers)

you dont need a decoder card now a days, unless you want tv output. plus creative dxr2 and 3's and the dvd inlay entry decoder card they have have crap win2k support, if any.

of course, they are just H+ cards rebadged, i think.

if you have like a radeon or a card with decoder support, why waste the extra money??? and a valuable pci slot?

Whatever you do...
stay away from Creative DVD drives. They have one of the highest failure rates ever. :(
