I thought I read somewhere once that DVD-ROMs in computers are Progressive-scan by nature. Is this true? Any links with details would be great.

Thanks,
Carl

Your monitor is progressive scan, making DVD's played back on your monitor progressive. The DVD-ROM drive doesn't play any part in whether or not you see a progressive picture. The player, be it software or a standalone player and the output device (TV, monitor, etc) both have to support progressive scan.

So if I went from my laptop to my HDTV 1080i tv it would be progressive? The video out port is s-video. As far as software I have both PowerDVD and WinDVD.

No, it wouldn't. You need progressive scan capable component out, which I have never seen on a laptop. It would be possible with a VGA-component adapter, but they run over $200.

Ok. That makes sense :D

So if I wanted to to do progressive-scan from a computer then I could use a projector connected to my vga port ;) lol
Well I was tring to see if I could use my lappy as an alturnitive to getting a progressive-scan DVD player so you answer my question. Guess I should have just asked that to begin with.

ATI makes a component adapter output from VGA that is $30 (I believe). I don't recall the specifics on how much of it depends on the card though. Also not sure if it is progressive capable.

that adapter is only good with ATI r8500 series cards (might work for the 9700 and 9000, not sure). they are able to output 480p as well as 1080i.
