Hi, I'm going to buy dvd-rom and most of them on vendors web sites are OEM .

Do i need a driver for it? If so, is it included with oem version, or i have to buy retail box?

I have WinXP, if a dvd-rom is not supported by this OS would it be a problem?

I appreciate any help.

Usually OEM drives are bare, as in no software and/or documentation. As for needing a driver for your DVD-Rom driver, XP should have them built in, hope this helps :)

I have never needed to install a dvd rom driver even under windows 98. OEM come with the audio cable, some installation instructions and screws usually...that's about it. If you have a look around you can generally find the retail version for a couple of bucks more and most come with Power DVD XP (v4) included. But if you already have the software then there is no benefit to the retail version.

Thanks guys.

The problem is that i'm building new computer. Can i install windows first, if i dont have the driver installed?

Maybe it's obvious, but it's my first time doing it, so i want to make sure before i buy dvd.

Yes, windows will supply the driver... I always use the windows driver and never change it.
