DVD-Rom speeds...

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but would I notice any real world difference between a 4x dvd-rom and a 12x?

if just playing dvd movies, no. it only plays at 1X anyways. for movies, those numbers just affect the max rate you can fast forward or fast rewind. for data transfer, then those determine max speed.

Well...would ripping speed be dramatically decreased? My 12x drive rips at most at 4x... Ripping speeds probably would go down, wouldn't they?

From what I've seen here, my ripping speeds wouldn't change a lot...hmm...I think I need to run some benchmarks with nero (or something).

You definitely should notice a difference in ripping speed - My 16x DVD drive hits 14-15x when ripping on a humble XP1900+ so the machine in your sig should have no trouble matching that. Make sure that DMA is enabled on the source and destination drives and ensure that they're on different IDE channels.
