DVD-ROM Recomendations?

Anybody have any recomendations for a DVD-ROM drive? Quieter the better. Have been looking at either the 16X LG or LiteOn drives. Is it true the LiteOns are super quiet when playing DVD movies? Thanks

I've got a LiteOn 16X, and it's bloody near silent.

The Pioneer DVD-116S is apparently well-equipped for that as well, plus it's slotloading for bonus 1337 points. 😀

I have always been a fan of Toshiba drives, but heard the current 16x model may be noisier than previous models...

I have a Samsung dvd + cdrw; like it quite a bit. Hard to go wrong, only I avoid Sony 'cause I've had problems with 'em in the past (not to say the sony drives are inferior, just that mine haven't worked out so well).

If you plan to do any DVD ripping, avoid Toshiba. Their drives are dead silent and do some of the best audio ripping after plextor, but if you rip a DVD they cap the speed at 2x.

I have a Lite-ON and it's fairly quiet, i'm sure there are quieter ones though and I have heard that LG are a little quieter...my old Panasonic was a bit nosier than my Lite-ON.

I've used DVD-ROMs from Toshiba, Sony, and Pioneer. I like them all, but the newer Pioneers are some of fastest performers I've seen and, not that it matters all that much, are the only ones to my knowledge that are ATA66 compliant. I get absolutely no HDD paging at all with either the Pioneer DVD-117 or DVD-120 drives I have. The only drawback in my experience, is that since the drive is always spinning at full throttle, they "seem" have a propensity to overheat and lock. In that regard, the Sony and Toshiba are a bit more reliable.

I found Lite-On to be very quiet, but I like Pioneer Slot-in loading better. Especially if you plan to really use it a lot
