DVD rom reads DVD, but not regular cd's

I have a Dell Latitude C610 and lately my DVD rom drive won't read any CD programs. When I insert the DVD it reads and plays in first try fine. However, when I insert the CD, any CD whether it's a program or just a avi movie, it tries to spin multiple times and it quits. I had to eject and reinsert many times for it to read CD and now it totally won't read it. I tried reinstalling the dvd drive, install SP2, but it just won't do anything.

Since it was working after many tries I don't think it is any software issue, but then it plays DVD w/o any problem so that puzzles me.
