DVD-Rom Read speed issue

Hello

I have a LTD-163D lite-on 16X dvd-rom. When I rip DVD movies using DVD Decrypter 3.0, I am only able to get a max read of 8.1X. It will not go any faster, whether its inside the track or outside the track.
In the specs for the DVD-rom, it saids speed (6.4X - 16X). My dvd-rom seems like its only reading at 1/2 the speed. (3.2X - 8.0X).
Am I doing something wrong here?

Most drives don't actually read at their advertised speed. However, it does seem to me that the drive should be reading a little faster than that.

Make sure that you have DMA enabled. PIO mode can hurt transfer rates. Go into your BIOS. Look for the option to enable DMA mode. Then, go into your device manager. If you are running 2000/XP, then look at the properties of the HDD controllers. Turn on DMA mode there. If you are running some 9x based OS, then goto the properties of the drives themselves. There should be checkboxes for DMA.

Check the review of the Lite-on 163 at CDRlabs.com

Using DVDspeed 99 they were getting an average reading of around 12x for DVDs.

However, I did find this statement in the review:

The DVD Speed website recommends using a single layer DVD-ROM disc with a capacity of at least 4GB. If you use a dual layer disc you probably will not get the best results because most DVD-ROM drives slow down to read them. Some even slow down to read single layer DVD-Video discs.

Maybe try another DVD?
