Basically, my problem is this. I recently installed Windows XP on my Sony Microtower E308ds (P2 450, 128) everything works great EXCEPT my DVD-ROM (Sony DVD-ROM DDU220E). It plays CD, CD-R, and CDRW fine. However, when I insert a DVD movie into the drive, the autoplay doesn't pop up, and when I goto My Computer and try and access the drive I get this error: "D:/ is not accessible. Incorrect Function."
Here's what I've done:
Tried uninstalling, and reinstalling the drive, that didn't work.
Checked to make sure it's compatible with XP and drivers are up to date, everything is fine there
Made sure I had right Mpeg Codecs and UDF 2.01 which comes with XP so that shouldn't be a problem.
Software decoder: tried both XP media player and PowerDVD, neither recognizes any DVD movie discs.
Asked microsoft for help, asked sony for help, looked for people with similar problems...no help.
I'm still not sure if it's a XP problem or a problem with my drive. I assume it's XP since everything worked fine with 98se. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks! -Nate at UCLA

nah its not software decoding problem, the drive won't even read the disc. Theoretically, it should work right off the bat since it's a compatible drive, and XP includes all codecs and has dvd decoding built in to media player...any other ideas?

XP does not include a DVD decoder. Media Player will play DVD's only if a compatible decoder program has been installed, either one you can buy from MS or one of the programs like PowerDVD. That's not your problem here, but I just wanted to clear that up.

To get PowerDVD to work with XP you need a patched version 3 or else the new version 4.

But even without a player or decoder files you should still be able to see the files on the DVD using Windows Explorer. So it would seem your problem is with the DVD drive or the IDE controller, or a driver conflict that doesn't show up in device manager. For example, when I first installed XP on my computer, after I installed all my software and drivers I found out my floppy drive wouldn't work. So I bought a new floppy and it still didn't work. So I reformatted, reinstalled XP, and tested the floppy after each time I added a new program or driver. Turns out that the beta drivers for my Vortex2 sound card was the culprit - with the shipping XP drivers installed, floppy works fine, but install the Aureal drivers, and the floppy won't work. Strangest thing.

Did you by chance install XP as an upgrade, i.e., installed over your Win98 installation? If that's what you did, you might consider doing a fresh install of XP instead. Taht can eliminate a lot of problems that are difficult to troubleshoot.

I have a related problem with WinDVD 3.0. It was installed, and I keep getting these pop up messages from XP's Help/Support saying I need a new patch.upgrade to make it work. Fine! I downloaded the patch . . . and it briefly ran, but quit saying it could not find my installation of WinDVD., Same thing with the on line attempt.

So I uninstalled the damn program completely but that stupid message keeps popping up. Anyone know how to stop it?

OK . . . then I checked WinDVD's site and there was no patch that would work. So, I ordered PowerDVD 4.0! Screw Intervideo!

As for the drives . . . they run fine.

Windows XP seems to have a problem with some of the cdrom/dvd's usually if you play with it enough you can get it to work. Go to Microsofts update website. Download the patch for CD recording, some have had success with that. If after you install that patch and it still doesn't work go to device manager and uninstall the controller that your cdrom/dvd is on. Restart and windows should find new hardware. Sometimes that will work.

Good Luck
