I rarely ever use my DVD rom, I might have used it a month or two ago. Tonight I attempted to run a DVD, and nothing happened. I tried 3 seperate DVD's, a regular CD, and finally a game. Not a single disc was recognized, it did not auto play, nor did running any of my programs first (Media player etc) work. It was as though nothing was there.
I then noticed that the icon and the drive itself was not seen via "my computer". There was no icon there, but if I went through my devices, it was seen there, it was also seen via AIDA 32. All I could see was my cd drive and cdrw drive.
I attempted to trouble shoot and finally got to a the option that it might be a bad driver. So I uninstalled the driver and rebooted the pc. When I booted back up, XP found the new device and I believe installed it with the updated driver ( I was in a hurry before work so I am unsure if an updated driver was installed but I believe it was)
The icon for the DVD drive appeared via "my computer". When I clicked on the icon, my entire PC stopped responding, all I could do was ctrl, alt, del, to end task, and the pc itself would crash. I tried 2 reboots with the same results.
The device worked the last time I used it, and I have not witnessed any problems untill now.
My pc is as follows
P4, 2.8 GHZ
1 gig DDR ram
XP Professional
GeForce 4 Ti 4600
80 GB HD
CDRW drive
DVD Drive
etc etc etc
My pc is still under warranty from a local place, and I am sure they will fix the problem, but I don't want to take it in, if I can possibly fix the issue myself. It bothers me now that my entire pc would freeze up when I clicked on the new link. I thought the drive could be dead (probably is) but if there was no icon, er..if the pc did not see the drive, that is why it would not work. When the icon appeared, just clicking on it would freeze the pc. I could care less if its dead or not, I will replace it, but alarms are going off, when I click on the DVD Rom Icon, and the entire pc basically crashes. It shouldn't be a decoder issue, because a regular cd or game would still play via the DVD Rom, just not dvds. Or it would give me a message about not having a decoder (with probably an easy way to buy one right there on the spot for $19.95 lol)
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice I could attempt tonight after work?
