DVD-ROM not recognized after installing Radeon 64 UPDATE - MAYBE Defective Radeon!

I finally got my Radeon 64 VIVO and installed it today.

I got an error message that there was NO DVD player. This is very strange since I used my Raite 8x to install the ATI software. I checked Device manager and the Raite DVD ROM is there (I even removed it to let Windows 98SE recognize it again).

I uninstalled and reinstalled the ATI software but I still get "No DVD player".

Yes, the DVD is recognized in BIOS and DMA is enabled. It worked well with my ASUS SDR and ASUS DVD player. As a side note - when I bring up the Radeon DVD player and press "eject", the CD-RW door opens.

HELP! Please.

EDIT: Read my last post - evidently the Radeon is defective or causing some basic conflicts in my system.

2nd EDIT: Read my last post the 27th.

I got the error message immediately after installing the ATI drivers and then again when I opened the ATI media Center to test my DVD system compatability.

Don't worry about the message about DMA not enabled or no DVD drives. It's a glitch on ATI DVD playback software. The DVD works just fine. If you say eject and the other drive opens up , that is only because the other drive has been taken as the default drive. You can chage the default drive to the dvd drive (whatever is the assigned letter for it) by strating the DVD program and then right click on it an choosing the right option.

Yeah, if their drivers are slowly getting better then their tech support is still in primordial ooze.

What version of the DVD player did you install? On ATI's site, they let me download the multimedia center 7.1 without DVD and said they would have an updated version of the DVD soon. My DVD works great.

Well, somehow I lost the DVD player. I'd better try installing everything again.

When I click the DVD player option from the multimedia center, I only get a compatability test with a "Warning there is no installed DVD player".

OK, I uninstalled and reinstalled the ATI software.

The DVD player is back but I cannot change the "default" drive as you suggested,
inqztive. I right clicked on the player, but there are no options for this.

Still no DVD player installed.

If all else fails, I am going to do a new format.

No, nothing I have tried works.

Does anyone know how to change the drive letters for the ATI default DVD player?

Last question before I do a new format - does it matter how the drives are setup in BIOS?

I have a Maxtor ATA100 card with my HD set up on it. The CD-RW is setup as a primary master on one IDE channel D;and the DVD-ROM is set up as a secondary master on the otherE. (Strangely, it worked well for my ASUS GeForce SDR.)

Thanks for all your replies.

1) Do you think a fresh format will solve this?

2) Auric, where do you get DVD Genie (is it shareware - costs $$)?

3) I prefer to keep my burner as a master since it had problems elsewhere.

Thanks, Auric. I also finally found it on that site (it isn't prominently displayed) and downloaded it.

However, when I ran DVD Genie, I found hitting "apply" after changing the "ATI Drive Setting" to "E" had no effect. The CD-RW door opens instead of the DVD. And the ATI System Summary insists there is "No CD Player". After opening the genie again, the drive settings are reset to the default "C".

Format?

You can try to go into control panel and changing the drive letters of the two drives around that way. Right click the device and go to settings and you will see the drive letter.

Try swapping the CDRW for the DVD on the ide controllers. It won't make a difference in performance whether something is the master on channel 0 or channel 1 it will still be the master. Just out of curiousity: if you play games, which drive does it use? It appears to use the CDRW in your setup. Is your cdrw better than your dvd for performance?

I recently bought a Samsung DVD from E8ay, and the stupid thing worked except for playing DVDs. My solution was to flash the firmware of the DVD drive, and whammo it worked perfectly. I realize that you are haveing different problems, but it nothing else works, try this.

Thanks for your interest and all the replys.

Fist of all, swapping the CDRW and DVD-ROM on ide controllers makes no difference: "Warning - NO DVD Player." (It still works fine as a CR-ROM).

There are no firmware upgrades from Raite. ATI has no later Multimedia Center than 7.0 on their site.

I am just beginning to wonder if there are other subtle hardware problems caused by installing the Radeon. See my current thread here on Mouse Problems with Maxtor HD Utility (in DOS).

My next step is to reinstall the ASUS SDR (and go back to a Drive Image) to see if everything is working as before.

Have you tried moving your ATA100 card to a different slot?

BTW, ATI has MMC 7.1 for download on their sight, it comes with no DVD player however.

Evidently it is a defective Radeon.

Or else some other major conflict. In my second thread (posted this morning - Mouse not working with Maxtor utility), I could not get my mouse to work with the Maxtor Utility in DOS (immediately after I installed the Radeon).

Well, I just swapped out the Radeon for the SDR ASUS (reverted to the original drive image) and now the mouse pointer again appears with the Maxtor utility!!! Weird, huh?

Now this could not be because of come conflict with left over ASUS drivers because after doing a fresh FDISK and FORMAT, the mouse pointer would not appear as long as the Radeon was my videocard.

RMA it? or try ATI tech support?

Hello, I am sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. Please don't think I don't want to have a new Radeon sent to you, but I doubt that would help, since I don't think a particular Radeon could cause all this trouble. It's either ALL Radeons, or something else is wrong.

What are your system specs? Did you set the AGP driving value thing in the BIOS for the ASUS? If you had tweaked the BIOS in any way, I would suggest trying to load setup defaults and see if that helps. If nothing helps, I'll be more than happy to have another Radeon sent out to you (of course you have to send the other one back though) and see if it's just that card. Sorry that I can't really help any further.

BTW, have you tried not overclocking and see if that made a difference?

Hawk, thank you very much for your response. I am 110% satisfied with your service and I got a great deal ($159 shipped for a brand new retail Radeon 64 VIVO!!!).

Because of all the extra steps I took, I somehow think this particular Radeon my be defective - I'd certainly like to get the Forum members' opinion on this.

I made no changes in my BIOS when I originally installed by ASUS SDR (I went from a Rage Fury 32 originally with no problems). What makes me suspicious of the Radeon is that I did a FDISK and reformat AND STILL the mouse drivers wouldn't load in the Maxtor HD DOS program. When I went back to the ASUS, it worked again.

Yes, I moved my CPU back to default and still the problems with the Radeon (which I uninstalled and reinstalled several times).

My complete system:

P3600E (@800Mhz again)
Abit BX6 (rev.2)
Maxtor 30GB HD on ATA100 PCI adapter
Raite 8x DVD-ROM
HP 9350i CDRW
256 MB Micron PC133 RAM
SBlive
WIN98SE
Latest Drivers

(For all the good it will do) I e-mailed ATI.

Okay, one more thing you can try: Take out your SBLive, some people had conflicts with those two cards (the Live isn't right next to the Radeon is it?) Take it out, and make sure the PCI slot next to the video card is empty, and see if you still get the same weird problems.
