DVD Rom not accessible after SP2 install

I installed SP2 and now I can no longer access my DVD Rom drive, it no longer shows up in 'My Computer'. If I look in the device manager, it has a yellow exclamation mark next to it and says the following about the device status:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I uninstalled the drive and the ide channels as well, but it didn't fix it. Updating the driver doesn't solve the problem either.

It's a pretty old drive, a Creative 6X DVD, but I have another computer that has exactly the same problem for a Sony DVD writer and an LG CD Rom drive. They are both inacceessible as well....

Is this a known problem, what can I do about it?
I don't want to fiddle around in the registry without knowing what I'm doing!

Any help would be appreciated.
