I have heard that using a DVD-RW too much will wear out the laser, and it's quality will diminish, so I should have a DVD-ROM for reading, and a DVD-RW for burning. Is this true?

I think thats true in a very long term.. You'll probably buy a new one before you see the aftermath of that :)

Not that I have ever encountered, the drives are designed with an average MTBF of 100,000 hours or so... by the time it wears out you'll have upgraded to a new blue-ray dual layer burner. If its gonna fail, its gonna fail. Not using it will just delay the inevitable. You got a bad one and its time to head to hot deals forum to find a free after rebate burner.

In my experience the eject mechanism fails 20 times more often then the laser.

thanks for the info. was just wondering cause i just ordered an NEC 3500 for my new computer, and didn't want to break it by not having a DVD-ROM... I guess I can save a bit by not having to buy a ROM!
