dvd rom loading issue

searched and didnt find anything. i remember hearing of a simple setting in windows xp to fix this problem:

when dvd placed in the drive it doesnt "take" the first (or first couple) of times. eventually it reads and everything works fine with no problems. this is a relativly new dell machine my friend is running.

does anyone know what this setting is? or another fix for the problem?
