DVD ROM keeps using PIO MODE!!! VERY SLOW!

My DVD ROM keeps using PIO mode for some reason. When I goto Device Manager, and open up the properties for Secondary IDE Channel, the option is DMA if available, and it says it's currently using PIO.
this happened to me last time, and it didn't use DMA until i reinstalled windows, and now it's back to using PIO...

what else is on the IDE channel? Using a fairly new IDE cable?
can you force DMA in bios?
update mobo drivers?

cdrw is on the other ide channel..
the cable is a 40-conductor cable... which should be fine for DMA Mode 2 and under
i'm using nforce 2.03 drivers.. which are the latest..

you might just have a really old ass DVD-ROM. i had a 6x DVD-ROM and it did not support DMA--i junked it because it sucked.

no mine DEFINATELY supports DMA... and it used DMA before... it is very fast in DMA mode..

it's a toshiba 12x/40x DVDROM...

remove/uninstall the Secondary IDE Channel in device manager then reboot.
windows will re-detect & re-enumerate the channel hopefully putting the drive into dma mode!

If it's windows 2000 then install the service pack, that usually fixes it for me.

I just had this problem with my new Dell 4550 and my old 48x liteon that I put in it. I had the second device disabled in the Bios so I could only get PIO mode. Go into the Bios and make sure you set it for auto configuration (at least that's what I had to do). As soon as I did that it changed to DMA in control panel.

This helped me in 2k a long time back, change it to PIO only, then reboot
then change it back to DMA, if not could always uninstall the secondary and reinstall as perviously suggested.
