I can't say how many days it's been since I'vd had to use my DVD-ROM, maybe 4-5, but I have to copy a disc for my mom and the fvcking drive doesn't see anything! I've data CDs, audio CDs, everything! XP recognizes the drive, it has power (tray works), but it never shows anything to be in the drive.

I've tried pulling the IDE cable and replacing it, on both the drive and the mobo, no change...any suggestions!?

Try using it to boot to a cd, or you can try to read a disk in DOS. If that fails, its dead. I have a pile of drives that do the same thing yours does. Perhaps if the lens is dirty a cleaner might help, but I doubt it.

Have you installed any software since the drive worked? Nero InCD caused the same problems with my optical drives.

Try the drive on another computer. If the problem follows the part you know that it's time to RMA (if possible) the drive. :)

Eject tray and leave it open, switch PC off. Remove drive from PC. Remove 4x screws on bottom of drive, remove outer housing. Unclip end of tray from tray and remove. Do the same for the drive front. Remove the spindle top, it's a one-piece piece of plastic. Extend tray all the way out, release clip, remove tray. Clean thoroughly, as well as the spindle top. Use a can of compressed air on the lense(s), and all over the rest of the mechanism. Replace the tray and spindle head, try a disc in it to see if it's okay. You may want to put the outer housing back on for this bit. Hope this helps, Dopefiend
