DVD-ROM hardlocks my box

I've got a Lite-On 166S in my P4 rig. It's the primary master of the secondary ide controller along with my Yamaha CDRW. Occasionally, I'll insert a disc, either CD or DVD, and it will attempt to read it, then hardlock the computer. This is starting to happen more and more frequently. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why, but I notice that it's almost guaranteed to happen if I haven't put a disc in the drive for a while. Windows has been reinstalled several times and the ide cable was changed a few months ago (was happening before that).

Liteon locks your box?
It rocks my box!
do you have your drives in CS or m/s relationship?
bios updates?
new IDE cable?

M/S, not CS
Latest BIOS on my IS7
I may try another IDE cable when I get home.

I had an LTD-163 prior to this that just stopped being detected after about a year. This drive is slightly older than a year now, possibly 15-16 months.

I swapped cables last night. It hasn't done it so far, but will post again if it does again.

I used to get this with the auto-insert notification using win98se.. the temporary fix was to turn off auto-insert notification, and after upgrading to xp pro it hasn't happened once. Have you tried switching its m/s settings with the cdrw you have?

Haven't tried switching M/S. Auto-insert notification is off, and I'm running XP pro already.

try a different drive. It sounds like it isn't the drive. see if a different drive does the same thing. it may be PSU. not providing enough power will freeze the computer and when the DVD reads it uses power and bam. just a thought.

I don't have any other dvd-roms to just pop in. This only happens when I insert a disc. It has never frozen when spinning up the disc that's already in there, no matter how many times I do it.
