I just got a DVD rom drive from a friend of mine, but I cant seem to get it to work. I put a DVD movie in the drive(black hawk down to be exact) and it shows the name of it in 'My Computer' but when I double click it or right click and hit play it says "Device not ready". So I took out the DVD and put in a regular cd and it worked fine. Any reason this would happen? Any thoughts on how to fix it?
thanks,
-doug

Do you have a dvd program installed? What about the jumpers being set correctly? Are you sure it's a dvdrom and not a cdrom?

Sounds to me like you just need to install some DVD software. I'd recommend PowerDVD.

I have WinDVD installed. I cant even browse the DVD. The jumpers are set. It shows up in the system profile as a DVD rom drive. I guess I'll just play around with it.

You might need to upgrade Your DirectX (I think the minimum for DVD is DirectX 8)... I'm using DirectX 8.1b with Win98 and WinDVD and everything works great.

Also may need cleaning?

I would put a cd/dvd cleaner in the drive and run it through a couple of times if it was used very much from your friend.
Load WinDVD up and then it should pick up the movie. It might have to be set for the region. Try these things and it should work if it can read a cd.

you might want to try another DVD disk as not all disk's will work in all DVD players it might be that the movie you have just will not work in that player but all other movies will i have the same problem on some DVD disks

good luck
