DVD-ROM drive not working right after reformat

Okay, here's my problem.

I have a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1202 drive, that will no longer do the Autorun when a CD is inserted.

I can open the CD (after quite some time) and see the files on it, but if I click on the Setup program on it (CD), I get an error. Also, some of the Icons just have the "generic" executable Icon. From past experience, I've had very little luck getting a program with this type of Icon to work properly.

The drive worked previously on this Computer fine in DMA mode. All I did was change the DVD to Slave on the IDE bus, and the other Device I of course switched to Master. I then reformatted the HD as it had been partitioned (98SE & XP) so I had a single partition.

Now if I switch the DVD to PIO Mode, it will work, at least with CD's, I haven't checked DVD's yet. Running the drive in PIO Mode is not really a solution, this is a DMA device and should run as such - it did before with no issues. I also don't want to take an unnecessary performance hit when I shouldn't have to.

I'm using XP Pro SP1.
This is on my second Computer, not the one in my Sig.

Any thoughts/ideas on where to go here ?

If the above is fastened correctly, change both drives to CS or cable select. Reboot.

Also check your bios to verify they are on auto and not manually set to the old devices

Will definitely double check the cable to make sure its well connected and no pins are bent. However, I would think since in PIO Mode it works, that this may not be the problem.

Didn't think about the BIOS, since I hadn't been in it for a loooong time. I'll make sure it's all on "Auto", and that nothings "hung" either.

Also, this is on a Socket A MB - MSI KT3 Ultra, based on the KT333 Chipset. I never installed the VIA Drivers, as I believe I don't need them with XP, and I recall having some wierd DMA (speed) issues with the IDE portion of these Drivers.

Do you have only one hard drive and one optical drive, if so, put the hard drive on the primary jumped as a master and put the CD drive on the secondary ALSO jumped as a master.

Edit: Then set parameters in bios for drive and CD to AUTO.

I've got one HD on the Primary now, I recently pulled one out.

The Secondary IDE has an LS-120 as Master (now) and the DVD-ROM as Slave.

I would put the hard drive on primary as master and the CD as slave.

I would put the DVD on the secondary as master.

Still no luck.

I've changed the DVD back to Master on the Secondary IDE, and the LS-120 (Floppy) back to Slave on the Secondary IDE.

This thing still won't work in DMA Mode, just PIO, and it's certainly not fast 🙁

I've even gone to XP SP2 - no change.

You have to install the VIA chipset Drivers for DMA to work properly.

Really ? I just saw the VIA Bus Mastering Driver when I looked at the Secondary IDE channel and thought that XP loaded all those now 😱

It's been so long since I originally set up this MB that I don't remember what all I installed on it.

I'll give the VIA Drivers a shot this Evening and see if that works.

According to the specs, the SD-M1202 is multi-word DMA, not Ultra DMA, and would not go faster in DMA than in PIO (although the CPU utilization may be better in DMA).

It's possible you can't get DMA to work properly because the LS-120 is on the same cable. To verify, try taking the LS-120 out of the system. For a permanent solution, you would move the DVD-ROM to the primary, and leave the LS-120 alone on the secondary.

I'll try that too. Maybe then I can get the LS-120 to work in 120Meg mode as well - the original reason I moved Master/Slave arrangements.

My thoughts were that having the DVD on the same channel as the HD was not really recommended. If the Drivers don't fix it, I may as well move it to see what difference that makes with everything.

I never could get the LS-120 on this KT333 MB to work in 120Meg Mode - the ones on my A8N-SLI Premium and KT266 work fine . . . .
