DVD ROM drive dead. Fixable ?

DVD drive not detected at boot. I substituted an old cd-rom drive same location, cables and it works fine so definitely dead dvd...

When I open it up ( I'm going in, Jim.) I'm sure I won't find anything obvious like a little smt fuse...maybe a blown cap ? I'm thinking must be fault in the power because it's just so...dead.

Anybody have any luck fixing one of these things, with a suggestion what to look for ???

I have a DMM, and a soldering iron, and RadioShack is just 10 mins away.

Unless you want the learning experience it isn't worth it. And did you check the jumper settings on the drive?

Yup, jumpers checked and switched to and fro and all....you're prolly right, not worth it but by the time i'm done messing about the thing won't be salvageable at all, so no regrets binning it.

There might be a defect in one of the SMT (surface mounted), in which case they can not be burnt. also, you will find lots and lots of chips that aren't marked.
If there is a burnt surface mounted chip, good luck soldering in a replacement
