Here are my specs:

Duron 800
Soyo KT133 via mobo
768 pc133 sdram
DVD-Encore DXR3 kit (w/ Creative DVD6240E DVDrom)
Audigy2
Windows XP

Ive got a problem w/ cpu usage whenever my DVD-Rom is reading (when the lights blink). The BIOS and Winxp only recognizes it as PIO 4 mode and im fairly sure the dvdrom is DMA capable. I had regedited WinXP to force it to DMA, but best i could do was Multi-Word DMA Mode2. I have teh dvdrom set as secondary master.

In Pio mode 4, everytime i played a DVD or DVDaudio, it would spike to 100% whenever the light was on; in Multiword DMA Mode2, it spikes to around 80%. It plays fine for about 5 seconds at a time, until it spikes and the audio lags really bad for a few seconds, and then plays fine again. It used to play fine before with usage hovering around 20-50% for dvdplayback; but i dunno why the cpu usage so high now. Im using windvd and creative's mediasource dvdaudioplayer. Even when using the player for the DXR3 mpeg2 card it averages around 70%. Any ideas on how to keep cpu usage down? it seems like enabling full speed DMA 33 could be the answer. Anyone know how to on this dvdrom in winxp?

I believe you are getting too technical with all the DMA. I am not an expert on DMA but I do know some.

Why use creatives program? I would use something like windvd before using anything with the creative name on it. Yes, I am not a huge fan of creative or their products.

Have any viruses or anything because they will do this to your computer. Run adaware and remove any junk to see if it helps.

My DVDROM is recognized in BIOS as PIO Mode 4. In Winxp its recognized as PIO mode, but i hacked the registry to force it to Multiword dma 2.
