so i am making a backup of my dvd i bought and i'm having some problems getting it to encode properly.

here is what i am pulling from the DVD (ifo, vobs)
main movie, subs, two audio tracks

here is what i want:
minimal loss of quality (acutally, the closer to dvd quality the better, i dont care about size)
and i'd like the res. to stay the same.
audio quality i'm taking down to 192bit vorbis
and i'd like the subtitles to be selectable but still contained in the file (aka, NOT hard coded)

so far, i've been able to mux them all together in the mkv container, but my quality is sucking, i can't compress my audio because besweet crashes when it tries to finalize, and i can't figure out how to get the subs to be selectable and not hard coded.

i think i can figure out how to get my video the way i want, but does anyone have any feedback on besweet and the subs?

FTW i'm using gordian knot. i've tried besweet 1.4, 1.53 and 1.54 all crash. this is under server 2008 x64

i would have posted this on doom9 but their stupid forums wont let me post for X amount of days

If size doesn't matter, save yourself the time and effort and just strip out everything but the movie and one soundtrack. Don't compress anything.

Why not just rip the main movie to a single VOB? DVD Decrypter can do it, for sure. I imagine that AnyDVD could also.

First off, what are your settings? How are you ripping this movie? Are you transcoding it? Need a bit more information.

If you are transcoding it, codec matters, a lot. If you are going for a movie that can be played on a dvd player, then MKV is not the way to go, the origional VOB is.

Remember that any transcoding (except for lossless) will result in a quality loss, so you need to understand what your target is and approximately how good of quality you want.

If you are going for H264 (MPEG4 10) standard, post again and I can give you lots of tips.

[edit] read a bit more of your post[/edit]

It looks like you are transcoding it to some other format. Here is what I would suggest. First, get rid for Gorgan knot and get Megui or Starxrip. I prefer MeGui. Second, Encode the audio to AAC using nero-digital. AAC is rated higher then vorbos in most Audiophile arenas. finally, use x264 as your H264 encoder. x264 is one of the most advanced encoders available and it is free.

After that, are you targeting quality without regard to filesize (so long as it isn't huge?) Then CRF mode is the way to go. A CRF value of 18 is regarded by many as transparent to the original. If you need it to be a specific file size, then use the bitrate calculator to find that out, then (in megui) use the HQ - Insane profile to get a pretty good encode.

If you want better encodes, post the settings you use and I can help you tweak them a bit.

I would also suggest going the single VOB route depending on how you plan on playing the movie back. It'll make things a lot easier.
