FairUse also, if you can find it for free... now he wants a donation I believe.

Dr. Divx or VirtualDubMod will also do it for you.

I use DVDShrink (free) and Nero OEM Suite ($5 + shipping).

I've used that combination to back up our entire DVD movie collection.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, Gordian Knot does the job well for .avi files. Personally I recommend using .mkv though: even if you limit yourself to the format restrictions of .avi -- mp3, ac3 and a other, inferior audio codecs for starters -- you can encode higher quality video in just as much space.

'fore you get scared away, .mkv isn't a codec, it's just a file wrapper. You take your video stream -- XviD in most cases -- and your audio stream -- mp3, ogg, rm, etc. -- and stick 'em together in one file. It's a great format, with support for embedded subtitles, a large variety of audio and video formats, and chapters, among other things. .mkv files have almost no overhead, even when using relatively complex audio formats like Ogg Vorbis; on a 2 hour, 700mb encode you'll probably get an extra 10~16 megs of space for video than you would with .avi.

Gordian Knot has support for .mkv, but the muxing is inefficient. If you get mkvtools from matroska.org and use them to mux your final filesize will come out about 0.5% smaller than Gordian Knot calculated. (so a "700mb" encode will mux to ~667mb)

This is, of course, a little more work than just loading the files and letting Gordian Knot do everything for you, but you'll get a better file in the end.

Just be aware that it encodes to a proprietary format that isn't the most compatible thing in the world. But it's outstanding compression regardless.

This and this might help. However, note that sometimes it can't interpret the incoming framerate properly - it might be off a bit, which causes audio sync errors later in the file.

However, I've used it to filter a few movies out to AVI, so that Ulead Videostudio could recompress them back to pure MPEG2 so that my WinTV PVR-350 could properly output the thing to VHS with excellent quality. Roundabout process just for TV-out, but the PVR-350's TV-out can't be beat; it's perfect. However, it NEEDS MPEG video and audio streams, so it can't handle an AC3 stream. And it has trouble with the DVD video stream.
So that's the backstory. :)

This is why you need Fair Use.

Instructions.
1. Insert DVD
2. Open Fair Use
3. Next.
4. Next.
5. Wait X hours.
6. Done, 700MB .avi file.

If you cannot find the free version, PM your e-mail address if you can accept a 5MB attachment.

i use a dvd player in conjunction with my tv tuner, it takes the full length of the movie and you can choose any options you want (only saves in .mpg) i then use windows movie maker 2 (free) to compress them to wmv

ok i found a free version of Fair Use (LE) and its in the process of encoding to Xvid now... 7% done...
it worked relatively well but for whatever reason didnt want to use the full decryption i had just done with DVD decrypter... so it did its own thing and worked it out and it gave me an encoder error and i messed with the settings and now its working! :)

lol so ill post back when its done but if it works this is awesome... goodbye DVDshrink and DVD decrypter! :p

It's odd that you're having difficulty with Gordian Knot. GK seems very compatible to me. Did you make sure you had DVD Decrypter updated to the most current version? I had difficulty with a DVD, getting all sorts of read errors, but after upgrading to the new version it no longer had those issues.

Anyway, glad you've found a solution. And give the .mkv format consideration; it's an extra 10~16 megs you can use, not to mention access to a bunch more audio formats.

With Fair Use, it's good to start from the beginning, straight from the dvd. Do NOT forget to select the audio stream (same screen as video), or you'll get a an avi without sound.

i tried it with 2 movies now, both are between 90-120 mins and they both came to exactly 400 megs. they seem fine but i guess the quality could be better if i were being pedantic... but anyway i set it to 700 so any clues why its doing this?
