I need to rip a DVD and be able to play it without the dvd, like, can i rip it onto the hard drive?
which software would i use for this? DVD shrink?

also, can i copy the image to/from different network computers?
would i just need the vob files?

You could use either DVDshrink or DVD decrypter to rip to ISO, use daemon tools to mount the image, and then treat it like a standard DVD. Using this approach you can copy it across your network.

You could use Shrink to remove all the extras and menus, and just rip the main movie to an ISO file (or VOB files...Shrink can do both). This could cut the required HD space down as much as half.

even if you don't rip to an iso, many players will play the vob files in a folder

Many new dvds require that you use decryptor first.

The best procedure if you want a total backup

Rip from decryptor to a dvd iso on the harddrive.

Use Shrink to 'shrink' the dvd and then use decryptor to burn the shrunk ISO to dvd.

Copy & decrypt it. DVD player software can use ot as if it were a DVD in the drive (PowerDVD can, anyway). It will either open the IFO or have an option to select a directory (I think WinDVD will do the IFO, but PowerDVD wants you to point it to the folder with video_TS in it).

I would just rip them as Divx or Xvid files in that case assuming you just want to watch the movie?

Would save a lot of storage space at the same time.
