OK... I have 2 DVD drives... an NEC 1100A and a Pioneer 106. They are both masters of thier own channel since I am running a U160 hard drive as well as another Yamaha CD Burner on a SCSI controller.

I am using Smartripper and the best speed I get ripping is 1.4x.

What gives?

Plus...anyone know how to get @#%& WMP to play audio CDs automatically.... I can't find the correct association..

Thanks!

don't forget thats 1.4x dvd speed, more like 20x cd-rom speed, not to bad, takes my computer about 30 Mins to rip the VOBs from a DVD.

Does DMA apply to SCSI drives? With my IDE drive that was as fast as I could rip until I enabled DMA.

Make sure DMA is enabled. If that isn't the problem, then it might just be that the drives will not do better than 1.4x. I have a Toshiba that will only do 2x, but I have seen my lite-on go all the way up to 11x. Normal rip speeds for the lite-on are around 8x.

Try DVD decrypter. It's the ripper I use.

IIRC, The legal group(I'm forgetting their name now) that controls DVD's like the RIAA made sure that any new DVD drives that came out over the past 6 months or more have this limiation. I seen alot of people complaining in other newsgroups about it as well. So you're not the only suffering with this ripping limitation. The older DVD roms can rip faster because they didn't have this limitation set to the drives. Just the new ones suffered. I would go with a retro DVD drive from 2001 or 2 for ripping.

If you are looking to get a different DVD drive that can rip faster, I got a Lite-On 16x that rips on the average of around 12x. Doesn't take long at all.
