DVD ripping speed sucks, any ideas? Benchmarks? (updated)

I just bought the Artec DHM-G48 16x/48x DVD-ROM.

When I use SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter to back up my video DVD, the rip starts at a pathetic 3x, and goes up to 8x or so. It never reaches the 16x. Similarly, Nero DVD DriveSpeed starts at 3.38x and goes up to 8x or so for movie disks. Goes up to 15.5x for data DVDs.

Is there anything wrong with this drive? I reinstalled the ASPI layer, etc.. If anyone else backs up DVDs, what's your starting or ending ripping speed? Is movie ripping much slower than data ripping?

Thanks!

P.S. Windows XP Pro, SP1, Nero and/or Adaptec ASPI, DMA mode on.

** Update: Benchmarks of other DVD drives can be seen here (Many drives reach 16x)

supposedly all Drives built in 2002 and beyond

have DVD RIP speed locked to 2x because of the MPAA so this could be an issue of that but since you said it reaches 8x than i doubt that this is the issue

my pioneer 16x never reaches 16x either when doing a dvd rip so i'd think this is probably normal for DVD ripping

DVD2One doesn't have DVD ripping functionality:

"Most DVD's are encrypted and need to be decrypted before you can process them with DVD2one. Since decrypting DVD's can be against the law in your country, this part is not included in DVD2one. You will have to search the internet to find a program that can do this job."

How are you ripping DVDs with it? :)

Changing directions is not recommended as it doesn't help to stay on the original topic. But since you asked, http://www.dvddecrypter.com and SmartRipper are very nice.

you are mostlikly ripping a dual layer disk which will not ripp faster than you are doing it!

PS, every disk will achive different speeds just be happy that you can ripp faster than 2X!

There is nothing wrong with your dvd-rom drive. The average rip time is around 20-30 mins. I have a Toshiba DVD-ROM and I rarely rip faster than 5x or so.

Well, I'm not exactly complaining ;)
I just want to know if better DVD drives exist.

I updated my post with URLs to other professional benchmarks.

Maybe I'm not up on the meaning of "ripping"

I messed around with it recently. I used DVD Decrypter which took 5 min 45 sec to decrypt a ~ 2 Hr DVD movie. Then I used DVD2one which took just under 15 min to encode to a file that will fit on one DVD disk. Total time was ~ 20 min for both operations.

Ok, when I say "Rip", I mean the process of decryping or copying the files from the DVD to HD. This is where the DVD speed matters. What happens after this type of ripping does not concern me at this point.

Can you please let me know what speed DVD Decrypter reports at the start and end of the ripping process?
