dvd restore disk to cd restore disk

I am having trouble with a pc not being able to read dvd's. I thought it might be the ide cable/plug on the mobo, but I have replaced the cable, used a different dvd player and still no go.

For some odd reason cd-rom drives work though. So in order to restore the pc, I need to convert the dvd to cd with spanning. Is this possible?

I am not sure if this should be here or general hardware, I guess it should be in both, but what to do? ;p

Thanks

The easiest solution would be to replace the CD drive with a DVD drive - even temporarily.

Or, use an external DVD (USB or Firewire) burner - then copy the entire DVD OS disk to the system HDD and go from there.

But, as OrooOroo says - with the proper settings the drives should work internally.
