So after trying a DVR tuner from my cable co & being kinda' pissed because of how slow it worked and how digital TV really did *nothing* for video quality, I'm kinda' wonderin' what's next.

Adelphia has been bought out by Time Warner so I'm wonderin' if they may do anything to the network to assist in making things better. But in the meantime, I'd almost kinda' like recording stuff on DVD. (Especially downloading & burning stuff from my Mini DV camera).

I know that DVD recorders make this easier.

Anybody think their DVD recorder is waaaaaaay worth it?? Anybody got recommendations???

Someone just had a couple Lite-On DVD recorders for $50 each in FS/T. I'll see if I can dig it up:)

And actually, I've thought about this too, however, my problem lies in Adelphia's inability to get a channel to change any faster than 3 seconds per click. (No, I'm not kidding).

That's one of the things that pissed me off.

Analog cable = change channels as fast as your thumb can move

Digital cable = change channels as fast as the audio/video feed can resynch & come up on screen again. (Well, sometimes the audio comes first, but it's still a huge mess.....and that was on adelphia's latest/greatest Motorola DVR/Digital TV tuner).

You still flip through channels with digital TV? Why don't you just use the guide?

I know a guy who's very happy with his MythTV setup, no comment on DVD recorders... other than that they seem like way to much trouble as some kind dvr replacement (?)

Well, typically (and, yes, even with digital TV) a lot of my favorites are grouped together so I just flip up/down to find what I want. (TLC, HGTV, Discovery, Speed, Golf, etc. etc. etc.) I watch all kinds of channels for all my favorite shows.

If anything, I'd have hoped they could make digital even faster, but I realize that it's more or less a bandwidth issue for them & less bandwidth=cheaper and to them cheaper=better.

Oh well.

And forgive my ignorance but I have no idea what MythTV is.

Oh and P.P.S..........DVD Recorders can actually make life quite easy. They actually "uncomplicate" things........(especially taking your home videos from the DV camera to DVD).

MythTV is just one of the homebrew dvr's out there (i.e. run it on a computer). Won't do much to accommodate your compulsive channel flipping though ;)

Are you just asking if a DVD recorder is worth getting? Sounds like you answered your own question. Would it make a good DVR? I'm guessing probably not.

Agreed.

I've seen DVD recorders for around $150 at Walmart and CostCo, they should be around $100 during Black Friday.

Another alternative is to buy a combo DVR with DVD Recorder such as the Toshiba RS-TX60 but it won't be cheap.

Free TiVo basic  which means no monthly fees.

Actually Rossman hit on something ideal!!

A combo unit with everything in one. (Would also save a heck of a lot of entertainment center space, too) But, I still hold my reservation against subscribing to my cable provider's digital service.

I know DVR is great. My in-laws love theirs....(DirecTV), but Adelphia just doesn't cut it for me. I'm discussing whether or not TW will improve on Adelphia's digital service or if it's just an equipment thing on another website, but that's my issue.

I think a DVR accomplishes my short-term goal of easy DVD burning from digicam and then a cool way to record shows. (?) But I know that DVR is really the best for that...........and then again......probably an all-in-one like Rossman said...........but then we're talkin'...............$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (cha-ching!) ;)

If it was $225 or less I'd buy one today. The convenience of having a TiVo and DVD Burner would be awesome. But I'm not going to pay nearly $400 for that.

I could use a PC with TV tuner card and DVD Burner but I'm looking for a standalone solution.
