Is Panasonic a good brand? I'm looking to record shows off television. Help me choose one for my future upgrade.

I would get a +R/+RW vs. the -R that the Panasonic is. Besides, I think the Philips unit is down to $599 at BB.

No I'm talking about a DVD Recorder that can record television shows. Not one for my computer.

Can the Phillips record TV shows though from analog television?

I'm not sure if it has a built in tuner or not.

I just read a review and it said it does have a built in tuner. That's awesome and would rock if I can record shows.

Yeah right, it's way cheaper to get a PC-DVDr and a TV tuner. And way more flexible, and faster, and more powerful, and, and, and....

Meh, TV tuners in PCs usually suck. Plus you can only input regular old analog cable..

Just saying, it's far more expensive for a set top and then you can _only_ record things from your TV. No flexibility.

True but they are great for their uses.

I have a DVD burner (Pioneer 4x) but still wish I could justify the cost of a set top recorder cause they're freakin cool :D Blows a VCR out of the water! (obviously)

BTW I hear Sony is releasing set top BLU-RAY recorders in Japan soon, or they might even be out now. That's like 26 gigs per layer.

I was just reading about it. That thing is gonna cost $1000.00 + for that badboy in US dollars. I could not imagine spending that much on a set top dvd recorder unless I was Bill Gates.

I think after the signal is decoded the PC tuner can use it. Say a satellite signal is processed by the receiver, just take the cable that would normally go the the TV and put it inside the RAM. You know what's !i Say!

For Great justic!

Err, it's selling for about $3000-$4000 USD right now. And it's not a "DVD" recorder it's a Blu-Ray disc recorder. Until HD content is widespread these things are pretty useles except for mass data storage.

Why don't you get a TiVo/ReplayTV? It's possible to then rip what you record onto your PC, and then burn with a DVD burner.

and a real pain the the ass to get working properly.

My mother had me help her with this same choicea year ago. At that time the Panasonic was the best of the 3 lower cost units out there. If we had to do it again, it would be a Pioneer without a doubt.

We have the now old news DMRE30, and it has been faithfull for a year. We feed it Ritek and Optodisc media, because it likes those the best. Quality is waaaay better than VHS, but still lower than a purchased DVD (we record off Dish).

Oh, and quality is way better than Tivo/Replay burned too. Those have to be recompressed for DVD compatibility.
