Is there any free program that will record a dvd onto your computer so you can save it? I wanted to copy some of my dvd's onto the computer...

I'm about to try SMART RIPPER but when I searched it came up with people wanting to make VCD's and DVD to DVD copies.. I just want it on my hard drive. Simple..

Hmm, several of the threads have links to www.vcdhelp.com and some also mention ripping as the first step of copying commercial DVDs. But yes, many posts in the threads are about single-step tools that rip and burn.

But search is stll your bestest buddy, even though you have to wade through some less-useful posts 🙂

I'll go re read some of em and see... the ones I read did not help me. I registered on the site, but you have to wait a day to post so I am searching there finding the same thing. I can't figure out SMART RIPPER and I'll I wanna do is copy a DVD to my computer, not make a VCD or anything. Just have it on my computer as DivX, an avi file or whatever.. Thanks 🙂

Copying it to your hard drive and reencoding it as a DivX movie are different things, copying it should take a few minutes where as reencoding it can take hours =)

doom9.net is a good place to start.

I'm feeling stupid cause I cannot figure this out... can someone please break it down for me so I can take DVD and have the movie be on my computer, not make a DVD copy or VCD, just on my hard drive..

Yup, download SmartRipper, install it and then put the DVD in. When you start SmartRipper it will scan the disc for the files. Sometimes it will require you to start playing a DVD and then pause it so that it can "unlock" some of the files. It is usually pretty good about selecting the movie from the list of indexes automatically. Then all you have to do is select where you want the files to go and then start ripping.

after ripping the files about 4 gb in size you will need a player that will be able to play the VOB files.

with power dvd--select open media files --go to your ripped vob files--add-- then play
