DVD Recorder Strange Behaviour

 We recently purchased six new Fujitsu Lifebook E8410s running Windows XP Professional with HL-DT-ST DVDRAM_GSA-T20N optical drives. After deploying them to users, we began to receive complaints regarding the ability to burn CDs or DVDs.

We visited each workstation to verify this issue and found the same issue in all cases. When the domain users are logged in they cannot author CDs or DVDs. They do not have the recording tab in Windows and no CD/DVD burning software will recognize the drives.

If we, as domain admins, log in the laptop we have no problems at all. The same is true of the local admin account on the laptop.

All the users are members of the local administrators group for their machine.

We have tried everything that we can think of to fix this issue. We have looked at the group policy, registry, and local access rights. We even reloaded a clean volume license copy of Windows XP Professional hoping that this might be a problem with the Fujitsu Windows installation.

We are at our wits end with these machines. Everyone in the department has taken turns trying to solve the issue but so far no one has been able.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

None of your policies have User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Explorer/Remove CD Burning Features enabled? Although, even if that was enabled, third party software should work...this is a weird one.

We use Infrarecorder as CD/DVD authoring software and neither it nor the Windows authoring work when logged in as the users. Both Windows and Intrarecorder performed without issue while logged in as a local administrator or domain administrator.

We have even attempted to add one of the users to the domain administrators group, deleted their local profile from their machine, logged in, and STILL had the same problem.

This is such a silly/simple issue that I am sure that we will kick ourselves when we are done but, to this point, we are just running in circles.

Thank you again for your assistance and we look forward to hearing more ideas.

Do you have a USB DVD recorder you could plug into the machines? Plug it in and see if they can burn something? Also, can these users log into other machines with burners and burn?
