I'm from the UK and they have both formats there. I'm told there is great discussion as to which way the industry will go and perhaps one of the formats will disappear (as did betamax against VHS in video format).

I'm nervous to buy in case I buy DVD + and then in a few years they are done away with in favour of DVD -

Does anyone know where I can find out more about this - or do you know anything that could help. Many thanks.

You realize you are buying a dying format regardless, right? Dual layer DVD recorders are coming next year. Those are what everyone wants. No splitting or downsampling of movies when backing up. Lots more space on 1 DVD.

If you are concerned, check your DVD players to see which they will read. Also, dual burners (+ and -) are relatively cheap now.

Just buy a Dual +/- drive.

Also, I don't think one of them is going away soon. The next gen of DVDS will also have many choices.

Julie1962, to be safe pick up a dual format burner. If you look at most retail locations, you'll see less and less single format burners as most manufacturer's are going the dual-format route :)
