DVD Recorder discs - using on computer???

Before I buy a DVD recorder (mainly for home video storage) - I just wondered can these discs be used on the computer afterwards.

What I'm thinking to do is record all my home movie video onto a DVD+ or DVD- disc, perhaps in VCD format and then hopefully I could edit them on the computer and re-copy them back onto a new CD fully edited with 'special effects' etc.

Anyone know if this is possible?

You would first record the movie on your harddrive. Then, you'd edit. Then, you'd burn to either DVD or VCD format. Once a DVD is burned using your computer DVD burner, you can certainly use it on the computer again. If you have a stand alone DVD players you want to play recorded DVDs on, I suggest making sure it will either -R or +R discs and make your DVD burner purchase accordingly.

Thanks for the fast reply but I can't currently record straight onto my hard drive. I have an older video camera and no video card (at least I don't think I can). I'm talking about 30 hours of stuff so it would be time consuming, and hard drive consuming.

Any help with my original question would helpful. Many thanks.

But you have to get the video into the computer somehow before you can edit or put in a DVDR. Video work is time consuming and hard drive space consuming.

How do you plan on editing?
