DVD-RAM or DVD-RW for backup

I'm finding a few SCSI DVD-RAM drives on eBay for cheap and considering getting one for my PII Linux (dev) server for weekly backups. I've also got a Pioneer DVD-RW in my workstation that I'm considering replacing with a DL DVD-RW but it is not really a priority.

Two options:
1.) Purchase a DVD-RAM drive and a few DVD-RAM disks to run weekly backups (about $30-$40)
2.) Transfer the DVD-RW, get a new DL DVD-RW, and use DVD-RW disks for backups (about $120)

I read that DVD-RAM disks are good for about 100,000 rewrites where DVD-RW are only rated for 1,000.

Suggestions and/or more options are appreciated. I will also need a solution for my AMD (production) Linux server and would like to use the same / simiar setup. (IE DVD-RW on both dev and prod or DVD-RAM on both dev and prod servers).

I did some figuring and option #2 sounds about right.

In the long run it makes more sense to use my current DVD-RW and get a DL DVD+R for my workstation. If I buy a 25DVD/RW spindle for ~$16.00, and I use 2 DVD's per week it will be 200 years before I'll use up 1000 re-writes.

[edit #2]

Now I'm reconsidering my options.

DVD-ram is great for backups. it functions pretty much like a hard drive or floppy. no program is needed you just drag and drop. for archiving duty it is far superior to dvd/rw.
