DVD -R writes only at 1x

I bought a liteon 411s and expected great things. It writes dvd +r in about 10 minutes with 4+ gig of data. However, on the khypermedia 4.7 gig -R discs, it will only write at 1x. Nero tools say it is transfering data at about .98 times.

Is this due to the media or the drive? It says on the box that it writes -R media at 4x.

Thanks in advance,

Most probably the media. Junk media gives slow speeds and poor results. You need to stick with a name brand media.

DVD media is a little different from cd media. You have to get dvd media rated for the speed you want to burn at. Or you have to use a hacked firmware to burn the media at unrated speeds

That makes sense. I got the Khypermedia -r bundle from office max. $4 for 25. I guess I can put up with the slower speeds.

Thanks for your help!!

Its not recommended to be 'cheap' with your blank dvd media, especially if you want the data to last... I personally will only use named brands- IE TDK, FujiFilm, and Memorex...

It's right out of the box. I'll have to check it when I get home. I went to liteon.com and didn't see a firmware upgrade so I assume it's the only one available.

There's a crap load of revs for the 411s. The latest was "G" and got pulled from the site after only a couple of days due to a ton of complaints about media compatibility and reduced burn speeds, so "F" is the latest approved one at this point. I'd be very suprised if your drive is current due to the recent release dates together with the long lead time to ship drives from China.

You also might want to check out Ritek discs. I recently bought a 1x spindle for my Pioneer 105 (plug: it's for sale, see sig 😛) and tried them out on my 411 - they actually burn at 2x with no problems. This is with the firmware that came with the drive (purchased during black Friday sale).

$42 shipped for a spindle of $50. Sure, it may not be $5 AR, but you won't have to worry about quality or shelf life of the discs.

How is that any different than CD media, exactly? 🙂
