DVD+R or DVD-R

Can anyone explain to me the difference between DVD+R or DVD-R? Which is compatible with more dvd players? I have a dvd+-r drive so I can burn either but would like to learn about the differences and find out which is better. Thanks in advance!

In short, DVD+R has more error correction capability. DVD-R has 7MB more space. DVD-R has higher compatibility but I think it's a mute point now as almost all recent DVD players support both. DVD+R also has higher speeds (8x vs 4x of DVD-R).

Why DVD+R(W) is superior to DVD-R(W)

I'd buy whatever media is cheaper. At the same price point, I always opt for +R myself.

DVD+R recommended for data.
DVD-R recommended for movies/video.

As to which is more compatible, that is always up to argument. I will say however, a recent survey from the folks at cdrinfo.com (?) seem to indicate that DVD-R is more compatible with a wider range of players.

The forum is called video, DVD's are a video format so I don't really feel like I am out of line asking this question here! Thanks to those who have helped so far. I am predominently using the DVD's for video, would +R work out ok for me? Thanks

When you say much better success do you mean with compatibility or do you mean with errors etc. Can you please elaborate. Thanks so much.

With DVD+R's, I have a much more difficult time getting the disk to read on other players or DVD-Roms. The movies burned on DVD+Rs would play fine on the burner itself, but no where else. I'd say only 3 in 10 attempts were successful. With DVD-R's, I've had a 15 and 0 track record. A pretty remarkable difference. I've tried various brands within each format, but none of that made a difference. Admittedly, I've only burned a total of 30 or so DVDs total (both data and movies) and this is a rather small sampling, but it seems to mirror what other people are getting at some of the more DVD specific user forums.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with me. Do other people agree with with Brian? What he says seems to be the prevailing consensus. Id like to hear other peoples experiences. Thanks

I've only used DVD+, they work in the 4 STB DVD players, and the 2 PC's with DVD ROM drives here at home. I've burnt far too few to claim anything other than; all the ones I've burned work in all the players, no coasters yet.

looks like youve gotten you A$$ smacked once again.

After eigt months (no exaggeration!) of research, I bought a dual-format burner, and since the cost of the discs is identical, I mainly stick with DVD+R nowadays. There are two main reasons for this:

1. Indeed, the + format has better error correction.

2. If you look under "Media" on the WWW.DVDRHELP.COM website, you will find that there are more reliable brands of + than -. I'm talking about high quality, brand-name media, since I really care about my movies and data, and I don't go for the cheap stuff (i.e. Princo or Memorex).

It's also a question of locale, since the brands that are more reliable (and don't cost an arm and a leg) are more easily available in the + format, in my area.

As for compatibility, it's hit-and-miss. I have three DVD players and two DVD-ROMS (not to mention the burner) and I've never encountered any compatiblity or reading problem on either + or - discs.

A note to Brian48: if the discs you burn can only be accesed from the burner, I suggest you either change the brand or abandon the format altogether, since what you have is - for all practical reasons - a coaster factory.

As long as you set booktype on +R to DVD ROM, it should play in any DVD player. Many DVD +R burners support booktype and if you use it, you shouldn't have any problems.

I have only used +R and +RW (Memorex & Fujifilm)...they all have worked in every DVD player so far...(2 Apex, 1 Pioneer)...DVD+R discs seem to be cheaper and I can burn at a faster rate with them...I see no reason for -R discs...

I have only burned about 15 movies so far but like I said...zero complaints or compatibility problems...

it's not. this is a discussion of the pros/cons of optical media, and belongs in general hardware or perhaps peripherals.

even if you incorrectly assume you can stuff this in the video category, what next? should we start some discussion on which vcr tapes work better?

hey.. what about the best camcorders for under $200? how about doing movie reviews next? or whether jenna jameson can act? surely those are all "video related"...

at any rate, i'm not the topic cop, so discuss away.... but it's hardly "on topic", and lay off of otispunkmeyer
😉
