I never understood the difference between the two. Are there any differences between the two?

The specifications are a little different and there can be some issues with compatibility with older players but for the most part either is fine.

All of the guys at work I gave Linux distros to had compatability issues with DVD-Rs, but no complaints after switching to DVD+Rs.
YMMV!

If you're using the discs for computer use only, either will be fine. The compatability problems deal mostly with DVD Players, game consoles, etc.

A little more insight:

DVD+Rs usually yield better quality burns. Compatibility wise, if you leave the booktype as DVD+R then you might run into some compatibility issues with older DVD players/readers. However, if you set the booktype of a DVD+R disc to DVD-ROM then you'll get even greater compatibility than DVD-R.
