DVD-R/RW media is about half the price of +R/RW media so right now -R/RW is dominating. If +R/RW media ever gets cheaper Id recommend that. You might also look at getting one of the new drives that can write both formats. Sony makes one and TDK is supposed to have one soon (cant tell u the model numbers)

Although I don't have a definitive answer to your question....

I recommend waiting a month or two for the new Lite-On drive that will be hitting
the streets under $200.00 msrp. This drive is supposed to offer everything the
Sony and TDK have to offer but we all know that Lite-On generally gives a little bit
more than most in quality and features (especially for the price). At $200.00 MSRP.....
I'm there man!!!

I didnt know Lite-on was making one..I have a dvd-rom and lite-on cd-rw right now, and they are flawless. Akthough anyone know why Lite-on removed all DVD-rom info from their site, i went to check for a firmware upgrade for my 16x lite-on dvd-rom and couldnt find it..

Lite-on is making a 4x DVD-R/RW drive that will hit the market at MSRP 200$! I think I am going to get one and get rid of my DVR A03. Then I will have the Lite on DVD-R/RW and my DVR A04.

BTW DVD-R media has worked with all the DVD players I have tried.

Here is my understanding, which may be wrong, but it was my basis for getting the a04 awhile back. DVD+r is better for data storage and DVD-r is better for making DVDs to watch in other appliances. I can't recall why exactly DVD+r is better for data storage, either they write quicker or hold more data -- I think it is write quicker. Anyways, I got a DVD-RW because I wanted to have the best standard, as that worried me the most.

No offense but I think yer links might have some biased info on them. ;)

If yer dealing w/ set top players made in the past year or so both "-" and "+" have about the same compatibility. The old the DVD player though the less likely "+" media will work.

My opinion on the matter is if want a DVD burn for backup/data purposes go w/DVD-RAM. If you want to make DVD movies I'd, honestly, wait as long as you can and hopefully the format war will start to end 'cause right now it's just one big cluster f((k. :)

CDFreaks Link
TT Hardware link (French :()

I can't find a link on Lite-on's site but it seems that a few other sites have the same info.
Could just be a rumor being spread but this is not a far-fetched proposal for liteon. They
have a history of breaking price/performance barriers.

I've been waiting for dvd writers to come down under 150.00 for a single format but if I can
get a dual format for slightly higher then i'm all over it.

Actually DVD-RAM is the worst for making backups because the odds are higher that the data will become corrupt. If the data is important then burn it to a DVD-R or DVD+R, else burn it to DVD+RW. RW can be re-burned 1000 times which is probably enough for most home users.

Either way the format war hasn't stopped me from buying it's the price and media price as well. If there was a 4x DVD-R for $99 I would buy one or a 4x DVD+R for $99 I would buy one.
