DVD-R negatives and positives

Hey all.. my company is wanting to purchase a DVD-R for our office... I'm not too familiar with DVD-R's. So here's my question, what are your opinions of the DVD-R format? Are the drives worth the money? Any negatives out their when compaired to the CD-RW format? How much data can a DVD hold?

Oh and we are going to want to use it for Data storage and for video play in a dvd (both DVD and DVD-ROM (PC) systems), which out of the different DVD formats would you recommend?
