DVD+R in a DVD player

I have just ordered some DVD+Rs because of a great deal. However, my DVD player is pretty basic and likes only DVD-R / DVD-RW.

Is there a way I can burn a DVD+R disk to make it work with my DVD player? I have NEC2500A burner. I hear that I can upgrade firmware to make it DL capable and have ability to set booktype to DVD-ROM. I'm not familiar with what booktype does. Is this the feature that will allow me to burn DVD+Rs and watch them on my Toshiba SD3860 DVD player?

Thank you.

Yes if you burn with DVD-ROM book type there is a good chance that your Toshiba player will accept the DVD+Rs. You can find firmwares here, 2.F8 seems to be the latest with bitsetting support.

Thanks! Now, I gotta go read up on how to update the firmware. I don't suppose it's as easy as running an .exe file and be done, huh?

If the NEC burner supports bitsetting, then you can burn the +R media as though it was DVD-ROM and this should play on 99% of the DVD players out there.

Teh Win, and I believe the ND2500A does. 😀

Burn at the slowest speed too. If I burn DVD-RWs at 2x, my player can't see the disc; at 1x, it plays fine.
Similar results with DVD-R - it sees the disc if burned at 2x, but it skips and has visual distortion sometimes. At 1x, it's just fine.
I've not had any DVD+R discs - only some DVD+RW. The player can't see them no matter what speed I use. I've never heard the term "DVD-ROM Booktype" used before; I'll have to look that up.
