DVD-R drive doesn't recognize any discs

hey

I was in the process of backing up my DVDs this week so I can bring a book back to school instead of a huge box and at one point the computer locked up while it was reading a disc. I restarted, re-inserted the disc, and DVD Shrink didn't see any disc in the drive. I tried another disc and got the same thing. Nothing shows up in my computer either, with any disc I try. I then did a system restore to a few days ago when I know things were working and still got nothing. I'll post specs when I get home, but does anyone have any suggestions in the meantime?

is it a pioneer drive? particularly the 04 or 05 series? read a bunch of posts and heard friends complain about their drives just stop reading discs. if it is, you may as well RMA it or buy a new drive. i still use my 105 drive as my main dvd burner. it never gives me bad discs. until it does, i'm never upgrading :)

did you try flashing the firmware on it? maybe it just needs some firmware lovin.

spent an hour with outsourced tech support last night then got transferred to a real tech hoping the whole time I could just get them to RMA the thing. They told me that they think I corrupted the software and I should format...even though a system restore to a known working date didn't solve the problem. Awesome. Calling again today after I format and it still doesn't work.
