DVD+R DL doesn't work on PC, but works in standalone!?

A friend gave me an old home VHS video which was, almost literally, about to turn to dust. Given that it was recorded in extended play (6 hours), the compression needed to get it to fit on a DVD-5 would have been murder on the video quality. So I found a deal that wasn't a TOTAL ripoff, a pack of 3 Verbatim DVD+R DL discs for 8$, did the VHS transfer and was upset to see that it wouldn't play on my pc DVD software (WinDVD 5). I was about to toss it when it occurred to me to try it on my standalone Sony (although in my experience usually burned DVD-Video, if there's any weirdness, will read on a PC before it reads on a standalone deck).
And I was surprised to see my Sony deck read it perfectly!

Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance...!

Can your PC DVD writer read other dual layer discs completely?

I think the writing laser may be different than the reading laser, perhaps your reading laser is not adjusted correctly for the second layer, or perhaps its smudged?

Like you say, the PC is usually a lot more lenient on format than a standalone would be.

Try updating your drives firmware, try using other software, like a PowerDVD trial (or whatever), and like I said above, try other dual layer discs.

When you say it wouldn't play, did it stop after a certain point or not work at all?
