DVD-R and CD-R drive in XP

Can someone clear something up for me?

I've got a Pioneer DVR104 drive that can do DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW. I hear that Windows XP has built in, basic R/RW capabilities. How does the OS know which type of writing, R vs RW, to do? Does it know when I have a DVD vs a CD? Do I need to load any other software or can I get by with the built in support.

The drive can with some value-add software, but do I need it?

The built in software supports CD R/RW. So you will need additional software to handle the DVD portion of the burner (I have the same unit, and use Prazi and Nero)
