DVD-R 1x or 4x? Supermediastore brand?

I purchased a Cendyne 4 DVD-r (Pioneer A05). I want to start using the drive. I don't think I care about the speed difference between the 1x and the 4x. However, I don't want coasters. Can someone explain the difference between the two other than speed, like compatiblity with older players?

Also, is this brand good? What do you recommend.

Speed is not synonymous with compatibility; that is, 4x should work just as well as 1x.

Good brands:

Ritek (Careful, 2x Ritek burn only at 1x on A05)
Taiyo Yuden
Any "name brand" (Verbatim, TDK, Maxell, etc.)
Princo (May have some problems, results vary)

I've burned Ritek, Imation, and Maxell brand discs. All play fine on players I've tried.
