DVD questions

I downloaded the Fedora Core 5 DVD ISO yesterday, and burned it onto a DVD-R. I am going to put Fedora on my AMD 2400 XP system (my older compuer).. I am wanting to install it onto a 20 Gig drive which is the only drive hooked up right now... (I have 320 Gigs of other drives to put in later...).. Basically, my question is this.

The computer to recieve Fedora has a CD-RW, and a DVD-ROM drive. Is there a specific format of DVD (DVD-R, DVD+R) that will allow my DVD-ROM drive to read this CD, or does it have to be a burner to read the DVD.

I tried booting up the computer with the DVD in the DVD-ROM drive, but it hangs at a screen imediatly after POST... There is no OS on the hard drive, and if I don't have the CD in the drive, it says something along the lines of 'INSERT A BOOT DISC AND PRESS ANY KEY'...

If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction, I would be most appreciative!! Thanks all.

Well, after some experimentation (and sheer stupidity) on my part, I figured out my own answer....

First, I was trying to read the DVD in my CD-RW drive... I simply mistook one for the other (DVD USED to be on top, but I changed them at some point and didn't remember)... So, I corrected that, and put it in the DVD drive.

Next, I tried to read a DVD-R from the DVD-ROM drive, and it didn't work. To try something, I burned the iso to a DVD+R, and it had the same issue. E:\>dir would tell me drive not ready or something along those lines....

Then, I put in a Command & Conquer game DVD. After the same E:\>dir command, I got the directory list...

NOW, I am downloading the 3.2 Gig CD iso's... I will come back if I still have an issue... Thanks.

Well, the CD iso files (3.2 Gig) finished in about 6 hours... I burned the first iso to disc, and tried to boot from it in the future Fedora PC... SUCCESS. I can't wait to get home from work, and start the install. The DVD-ROM most definatly can't read burned DVD-R or DVD+R.

YOUR (!) DVD-ROM can't read DVD-R nor +R. If you go buy a DVD-ROM drive today, it'll do that no problem.

Just like with CD and CDR technology, there are first-generation DVD-ROM drives that don't know DVDR at all.

Exactly what DVD-ROM drive do you have there?

Oh boy..... it was from a LONG time ago... It pre-dates DVD burners, so I should have known, because I had the same issue after I got a CD burner shortly after they came out.

kind of a DUH thing on my part.... LOL. Thanks for the reply.

That's nothing. I have a DVD ROM that will ONLY read DVD+-R/RW disks. It absolutely refuses to read retail pressed DVDs, either video or data.

ps: sorry to thread jack ;)
